Description
On these camps or young people will be working towards their John Muir Awards. They will part of the design process of the activities we undertake but will be encouraged to discover, explore, conserve and share.
Discover:
This is where the our young people will be able to really connect with nature using their senses we will be doing mindful activities like forest bathing, yoga, creating poems/stories. The aim of this part of the award is for the children to develop an interpersonal relationship with the nature around them to really give them a sense of belonging and kinship.
Explore:
This is where our young people will get to the explore nature, wild adventures in the trees, using navigation techniques, identifying plants, fungi, trees and learning about the different species that are around them, animal tracking, pond dipping, bug hunting your kids will become nature experts by the time they have finished the course, they will also use their new found knowledge and take it further by exploring how we can work with nature by making foraged lunches, creating dens, and using bush-crafts to create various items.
Conserve:
This is where our young people will be able to become stewards of the land, they will spend their time giving back to nature and learning practical tools they can take with them throughout their lives; removal of invasive species, habitat survey’s, bioblitz, making bird/bat boxes, creating insect hotels etc.
Share:
On the last session we will invite parents to come down at 2pm for a celebration of all the young people’s achievements.
On completion our young people will each be awarded a John Muir Certificate.
25 hours of these sessions makes up what you need to get the certificate, which is 5 sessions in total. If there is illness or absences they can make up their lost hours as we have added a 6th session just in-case (welcome to come to all 6) Alternatively hours can be made up by coming along to our Monday summer camps (can volunteer if they are older) or you can help them make up the hour’s lost as a family and we will work closely with families to ensure all our young people achieve this outcome. However there is no expectation to complete the award young people are welcomed even if they just want to come and experience it.
